The mirror has little function in my life. I can shave in the dark and I don't do anything with my hair. Unless I've got a bit of grit in my eye, I'm not a mirror person. I am probably at a point where I should look at my face more than I do. I take it for granted and just use my face like a windshield, to protect what's going on the mind. That's a more private and personal place, something I am more concerned with.

I am 46 now. When I was younger, I was more interested in appearance. Like a lot of young men, I fantasised about being on stage, and I guess part of the rock-star fantasy is about striking poses and looking right. I wrote a book about it and the front cover was my National Union of Students' photograph from when I was 18. I look like Michaelangelo's David with a New Romantic fringe.
Somebody once wrote they could tell straight away by looking at me that I'd listened to The Smiths in 1984 and never got over it. I think that's still relatively true. I still have a fringe. In fact, I've only ever been to one barber since I was born - the guy in the village who charges £ 4.50. I can't bear the idea of discussing styles - I just like to go in and hear "Same again?" and say, "Yep.".
There'll come a time when the earring will have to go. Maybe when my daughter says, "Dad, you've got to get rid of that, you look like a Rolling Stone." I don't want to end up looking like the oldest swinger in town."

Die tägliche Pflege des Haares besteht allgemein in Kämmen und Bürsten des Haares. Je nachdem wie dasselbe durchgeführt wird, kann es ebenso schädlich wie nützlich sein. Ob man zuerst den Kamm oder die Bürste in Tätigkeit setzt ist belanglos. Jedenfalls soll der Kamm weitgestellte stumpfe Zähne haben. Am besten sind die Kämme aus Bein, Horn oder Holz. Stahlkammer mit scharfen, engen Zinken sind schädlich.
Das Haar wird durch diese zu sehr gerissen, die Kopfhaut aufgekratzt und geschädigt. Dem Kamm fallt übrigens nur die Aufgabe zu, das Haar zu ordnen und ihm die gewünschte Richtung zu geben.

Weitaus wichtiger und von besonderer Bedeutung für die Haarpflege ist das Bürsten. Man wähle für weiches, dünnes Haar weiche und für starkes und reiches Haar harte Bürsten. Dieselben müssen eine Reinigung mit Seife und vertragen, welche ab und zu durchgeführt werden soll. Nach der täglichen Haarpflege kann die Bürste durch WasserReiben gegen eine andere Bürste oder durch Auskämmen gesäubert werden. Die Wirkung des Bürsten ist eine massierende. Die Kopfhaut wird hiedurch gut durchblutet, die Haarspapillen und mit ihnen die Haare werden genügend ernährt. Allerdings muss das Bürsten - soll es eine tiefgreifende Wirkung haben - entsprechend gründlich, nicht nur täglich morgens und abends, sondern auch genügend lang vorgenommen werden. Von den Engländerinnen erzählt man, dass sie ihr schönes, reiches Haar nur dadurch erzielen, dass dasselbe von Kindheit an täglich eine halbe Stunde gebürstet wird.




Cleaning tips - Tough stains made easy

1) Wash clothes inside out to prevent fading and stop dark denim developing white crease lines. If your wardrobe is full of dark garments, use a specialist detergent to help keep those colours true.

2) If you are using tablet washing detergent, put the tablets in the drum rather than in the dispenser drawer.

3) Grass stain on white leather sport shoes? Spray with a few drops of WD-40 then wipe with a clean cloth.

4) Ballpoint pen stains? To remove the mark from cotton, dissolve it with a spritz of hairspray or a dab of methylated spirit or washing up liquid. Use a cotton bud to pick up the ink that has bled out and then wash as normal in biological detergent.

5) Curry stains? Act fast using white paper towels to absorb as much as of the stain as possible. Try applying methylated spirit to the stained area and leave it for a short time. The mark will turn red. Blot again; moving to a clean piece of paper regularly  until no more stain comes through. Flush with cold water and leave to soak in a mild detergent solution for a few minutes. Machine wash as normal. If there's still a stubborn mark remaining, expose the item to sunlight for a few days.

I feel left out of the hoo-ha around Alexandr Orlov  the advertising meerkat. I don't get what's so funny; I've never met anyone who does, apart from my daughter. But she's three, and her needs for a car insurance aggregator site are minimal. But clearly someone other than her does. (...) .It also seems to be exerting an influence on men's fashion  how else to explain first the return of the cravat and now the smoking jacket. Admittedly, I haven't actually seen either of those items being worn by a single human being who isn't being photographed for the purposes of explaining that the cravat and smoking jacket are back, but never mind: the others are probably at home, busting a gut at the Meerkat adverts while dressed like Noel Coward.

Once, of course, it was the symbol of louche sophistication (Bing Crosby was buried in one) , but these days it's hard not to feel that the smoking jacket smacks of trying too hard. At least anyone with the desire to revive it can claim it's essentially a practical item, the original idea being that the thick material would absorb the smoke. That said, no one seems to have considered that this means your louche, sophisticated jacket reeked like a pub ashtray. Once again, I don't really get it. ( Alexis is wearing a jacket and trousers, both by Ede & Ravenscroft, a shirt, by Jeff Banks at Debenhams, and Slippers by Aspinal of London, ).
